E-mail: [email protected] Blood samples collection is a common method in biological research using domestic animals. However, most blood sampling techniques are complicated and highly invasive and may therefore not be appropriate for wildlife animals in research concerning stress. Thus, a non-invasive method to measure steroid hormones is critically needed. The first goal of this study was to determine how glucocorticoids concentrations are impacted by translocation and reproductive activity in crab-eating-fox (Cerdocyoun thous) in captivity. The physiological relevance of fecal glucocorticoid metabolites was further validated by demonstrating: (1) The translocation of a male to a females enclosure resulted in a 3.5-fold increase compared to baseline concentrations, (2) changes in adrenocortical activity, as reflected in concentrations of fecal cortisol metabolites during reproduction, gestation and lactation in females foxes, indicating that social interactions resulted in large increases of fecal glucocorticoids metabolites during the reproductive season. From these findings we conclude that fecal samples can be used for the non-invasive assessment of adrenocortical status in crab-eating-fox.

Malignant insulinoma in a crab-eating fox (Cerdocyon thous)
This report describes a case of insulin-secreting pancreatic beta cell carcinoma in a crab-eating fox (Cerdocyon thous). The animal died approximately 60 days after the first clinical signs. At necropsy, a nodule (2 x 3 cm) was observed in the pancreas. Microscopic features were consistent with a pancreatic islet cell carcinoma. By immunohistochemistry, neoplastic cells were strongly positive f...
متن کاملExposure of pampas fox (Pseudalopex gymnocercus) and crab-eating fox (Cerdocyon thous) from the Southern region of Brazil to Canine distemper virus (CDV), Canine parvovirus (CPV) and Canine coronavirus (CCoV)
The exposure of 13 Brazilian free-ranging nondomestic canids (five pampas fox Pseudalopex gymnocercus and eight crab-eating fox -Cerdocyon thous) from Southern region of Brazil, to Canine distemper virus (CDV), canine parvovirus (CPV) and Canine coronavirus (CCoV) was investigated. Antibodies against CDV were detected in 38.5% (5/13) of the samples. There were anti-CDV antibodies in 60% (3/5) o...

In this study, rabies virus was isolated from a naturally infected crab-eating fox [Cerdocyon thous] in a rural area of São Paulo State, Brazil. The sample was positive for the standard techniques used for rabies diagnosis. The isolate was antigenically characterized using anti-nucleoprotein monoclonal antibodies. Studies on molecular epidemiology by patterns of nucleotide substitution in the n...

متن کاملCanine distemper infection in crab-eating fox (Cerdocyon thous) from Argentina.
Canine distemper virus (CDV) has been reported worldwide in wild carnivores and has been cited as the cause of population declines in some species. Crab-eating foxes (Cerdocyon thous) from El Palmar National Park, Argentina, were observed either dead or exhibiting clinical neurologic signs. Samples were taken from two individuals that were laterfound tobe positive for CDV by direct immunofluore...
